Sheinbaum Defends 4T Transport Projects

President Claudia Sheinbaum has defended flagship transport projects initiated under her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), who governed from 2018 to 2024, citing passenger and cargo figures despite accumulated controversies, incidents, and substantial financial losses. She made the statements during her second government report presentation at the National Palace.

Sheinbaum spoke to over 300 guests, including her legal and expanded cabinet, governors, and special invitees. She highlighted the Tren Maya, Mexicana de Aviación, the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), and the Tren Interoceánico. All are signature projects of the so-called Fourth Transformation movement.

Tren Maya and AIFA Passenger Numbers

Regarding the Tren Maya, Sheinbaum stated it has transported 2.5 million passengers and claimed it is evolving as planned. This defense comes after the train service suffered a derailment of a carriage with 123 passengers in Campeche this Monday.

She also provided figures for the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA). Sheinbaum said AIFA transported 3.6 million passengers in the first half of 2026. She emphasized this figure is above what was planned.

Mexicana de Aviación's Expansion

The president addressed the state airline, Mexicana de Aviación. She said that in nearly three years of operation, it has transported one million passengers. Sheinbaum announced plans to triple that number, adding 14 more aircraft to meet its goals.

Tren Interoceánico's Cargo and Return

Sheinbaum confirmed the Tren Interoceánico will resume passenger operations between November 2026 and February 2027, depending on the specific rail segments. This follows a derailment in December 2025 that left 14 people dead.

She also highlighted the cargo performance of this interoceanic railway. She stated it has transported 2 million tons of cargo in over two years of operations.

Other Rail Projects in Development

The president noted progress on several other rail lines. She mentioned the AIFA-Pachuca, Mexico City-Querétaro, and Querétaro-Nuevo Laredo projects. Other lines cited were Querétaro-Guadalajara, Salina Cruz-Ciudad Hidalgo, Roberto Ayala-Dos Bocas, and a cargo version of the Tren Maya.

Her presentation defended these projects despite them accumulating numerous controversies and incidents and registering substantial financial losses.
