Travel searches for Tulum have skyrocketed by 1500% for the final months of 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier, according to data from the online travel platform Despegar. The company's analysis shows a substantial reconfiguration in booking intentions, with the Mexican Caribbean destination leading a surge in interest.

Despegar's metrics indicate a rapid rotation of traveler flow towards established sun-and-beach destinations that have renewed connectivity infrastructure. Claudia Alva, VP and Country Manager of Despegar in Mexico, explained the significance of the data.

"The interesting thing about this data is not only which destinations are growing, but the speed at which demand changes," Alva said. "That Tulum multiplies its searches by 16 in a year is a concrete signal of how traveler interest moves."

Top trending destinations for late 2026

Following Tulum, a diverse mix of international urban hubs and resorts show significant growth in search volume on the Despegar platform for travel between September and December 2026.

DestinationSearch Increase vs. 2025
Milan, Italy+235%
Costa Maya, Mexico+230%
New York, USA+230%
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil+215%
Montego Bay, Jamaica+200%

A structural shift in travel planning

Alva stated that the underlying change involves inverting the traditional dynamic of the commercial channel. For years, the industry worked on a logic where the traveler first needed to know where they wanted to go before finding out what to do there. She argues that technology now allows the process to start with a person's interests and travel context to help them discover options.

For the travel agency ecosystem in Mexico, these indicators confirm the urgency of integrating advanced analytics. This integration is needed to optimize inventory, negotiations with suppliers, and strategic conversion campaigns ahead of the fiscal year-end.

The acceleration of tourist demand in the Mexican market is setting new parameters for the travel industry. The speed of these operational shifts demands predictive commercial models for travel intermediaries, including agencies, tour operators, and consolidators.

Context from Tulum's local registry

A separate report by REPORTUR.mx, cited in the source, provides context on a different aspect of Tulum's tourism. The presence of sargassum seaweed and the low season have coincided to cause a sharp decrease in beach weddings there. Clarisa Pat Maza, an official of the Civil Registry, reported that 2026 has seen one of the lowest demands for weddings in the last decade.
