Puebla Airport Modernization Backed by $59 Million

The government of Puebla is advancing a 1-billion-peso investment, roughly 59 million dollars, to expand and modernize the city's international airport. Governor Alejandro Armenta stated the project also aims to consolidate the Puebla Airport District, with planned improvements to access roads, arrival and departure areas, and services for tourists and visitors.

Tourism Secretary Carla López-Malo explained that joint promotional campaigns, familiarization trips, and branding efforts for "Puebla, El Latido de México" are underway. These campaigns are currently active at the Mexico City International Airport, AIFA, Cancún, Monterrey, and Mérida, with upcoming actions planned for Tijuana and Guadalajara.

International Promotion Strategy

Internationally, the Tourism Development Secretariat's promotion focused on New York in August and Los Angeles in September. Subsequent campaigns are scheduled for Houston and Chicago. López-Malo indicated this forms part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen connectivity. Work is being coordinated with tourism authorities in states that have opened new flight routes to and from Puebla.

Commercial Development Plans

Governor Armenta noted the trust for the Airport District has seen substantial progress. The state government will contribute its own land parcels located in front of the air terminal to drive an economic and commercial development project in partnership with local Puebla business leaders.

José Luis García Parra, the General Cabinet Coordinator, reported that an agreement with Grupo Mundo Maya is under review by its new General Directorate. Once this process concludes, the corresponding tenders can begin. He detailed that an expenditure of 600 million pesos is planned for a first stage, with an additional 450 million pesos to complete the project next year.

Infrastructure and Event Goals

The state government emphasized its commitment to consolidating modern airport infrastructure alongside a connectivity and promotion strategy to generate greater tourist, economic, and commercial activity. Federal Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez conducted a technical tour in July of the main venues and spaces for hosting the Tianguis Turístico México 2027. This major tourism fair is scheduled to take place in Puebla city from May 26 to 29 next year.
