The Six-Month Passport Validity Rule
A primary requirement for foreign travelers is their passport's expiration date. The United States generally demands that a passport be valid for at least six months beyond the traveler's planned departure date from US territory. Some countries have exceptions to this rule through bilateral agreements. Mexico is not on that list of exceptions. Mexican travelers must pay special attention to this six-month validity requirement.
Document Options for Land Border Crossings
Mexican citizens entering the United States at a land border have certain alternatives to a conventional passport. The acceptable document depends on the travel mode, purpose, and the individual's immigration status. Available options include the Border Crossing Card (DSP-150), the laser B-1/B-2 visa, and the SENTRI card. These alternatives do not mean any traveler can forgo a passport in all cases.
Consequences of Invalid Travel Documents
Problems can arise even before reaching the United States. Airlines check passenger documentation before boarding and can prevent travel if requirements for entry into the destination are not met. Having a purchased ticket, hotel reservation, or even a valid US visa does not guarantee a passenger can board the plane if their travel documents are insufficient.
US authorities may conduct another review upon arrival in the country. In certain circumstances, the lack of a valid document can lead to entry denial.
Using a Valid Visa in an Expired Passport
Travelers do not necessarily need to renew their US visa if it is still valid but was placed in a passport that has since expired. In this scenario, the traveler can use the valid visa in the old passport alongside their new, valid passport. The recommendation is to carry both documents during travel: the new passport as the valid travel document and the old passport containing the US visa. This allows travelers to prove they possess a valid visa even if the document it was stamped in has expired.
