JetSMART targets Paraguayan travelers with new
Low-cost carrier JetSMART is promoting its new daily flight between Posadas, Argentina, and Buenos Aires to residents of Paraguay's Itapúa department
JetSMART is marketing its new daily route between Posadas, Argentina, and Buenos Aires directly to travelers in Paraguay.
The airline began communicating this strategy to Paraguayan media this week. The flights are scheduled to commence on November 1, connecting Posadas Airport with Aeroparque Jorge Newbery in Buenos Aires daily.
Targeting cross-border traffic
Posadas Airport is located just across the Paraná River from Encarnación, the capital of Itapúa. JetSMART's commercial manager for International Markets, Verónica Marambio Álvarez, stated that the return of Posadas to the airline's network represents excellent news for thousands of people in southern Paraguay. She described it as a close and accessible alternative for flying to Argentina and connecting onward through the carrier's network.
Cross-border travel for flights is a long-established practice in the region. For decades, residents of northeastern Argentina have used Asunción as their main international gateway, similar to Buenos Aires's Ezeiza airport. Many Paraguayans also travel overland to Argentine cities like Formosa, Resistencia, Posadas, or Puerto Iguazú to catch flights to Buenos Aires, depending on exchange rates.
Flight schedule and connections
The route will operate seven days a week using Airbus A320 and A321 family aircraft. From Posadas, passengers will have access to connecting flights via Buenos Aires to several Argentine destinations.
JetSMART's offering at Posadas Airport complements the existing service from Aerolíneas Argentinas, which operates 21 weekly flights-17 to Aeroparque and 4 to Ezeiza.
The aviation landscape around Encarnación
Despite receiving upgrade works last year, Encarnación Airport has failed to establish regular passenger operations. Last year, Argentine carrier Flybondi operated a couple of charter flights from Buenos Aires for a rally world championship event. Although the marketing for regular services was launched, demand did not support them, and they never began.
Beyond Posadas, other air connectivity options for residents of Encarnación and its influential area-one of the richest in Paraguay-are located at the Triple Frontier, 280 kilometers away. Airports in Foz de Iguazú, Brazil, and Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, serve this zone. The Paraguayan capital, Asunción, is 360 kilometers from Encarnación.
The region's economic strength and its relationship with aviation are demonstrated by the AguaVista Airport Executive, Paraguay's first private aerodrome. It was inaugurated in June of this year and features top-level infrastructure.
