Santander and American Express have announced the end of their partnership for issuing credit cards in Brazil. The bank confirmed the termination to the publication Passageiro de Primeira.
According to the bank's press office, customers are being notified of their card's deactivation date and will receive guidance on available alternatives. As part of this transition, Santander will offer substitute products tailored to each client's profile, with special benefits. Points already accumulated will remain available and can continue to be redeemed normally through the Esfera program.
Card Discontinuation Timeline
The American Express-branded credit cards issued by Santander will be definitively blocked for new purchases on the following schedule.
Each client will receive a communication with the specific inactivation date for their card and instructions for replacement.
Replacement Card Offers
Santander has not defined a single substitute product for all customers. The offer will be prepared individually, based on each person's credit profile and relationship with the bank.
Clients who only have an American Express card may receive an offer to continue using another Santander card. Anticipated conditions for eligible customers include a 12-month annual fee waiver, credit limit reassignment, extra welcome points, and Santander benefits including special conditions for experiences, shows, and other events.
Clients who already possess another Santander credit card will also receive a specific offer for their current product. This could include 12 months of annual fee waiver, reassignment of the Amex limit, and extra welcome points. If the client already has a more advantageous annual fee condition, it will be maintained.
Points and Existing Charges
The points already available will remain in the customer's account. They can be redeemed normally through Membership Rewards or Esfera, respecting the program's rules and validity period.
Installment purchases made before the card's inactivation will continue to be billed on subsequent statements until fully paid. The block will only prevent new purchases after the date communicated by the bank.
The change only affects the American Express cards issued by Santander. The current account and other products held by the client at the bank will continue to function normally.
Customer Communication
Santander will send personalized communication with the offered card or benefit and instructions for next steps. Notices may be sent via email, SMS, or the Santander app. The bank recommends customers monitor messages from official channels, as offers and block dates may vary by profile.
